A DUI means a filing: call now and an agent who works with DUI drivers files it today. DUI insurance is a regular policy with that filing attached, and the filing usually lasts about three years.
Car insurance with a DUI: why the state wants a filing
After a DUI, your state wants proof from your insurer that you stay covered. The SR-22 is that proof.
A DUI may trigger SR-22 or FR-44 filing, depending on the state. You buy the policy first. Then the insurer files the form.
If the policy is canceled, the insurer tells the state and the license is suspended again. Keep the policy active for the whole period.

How long, by state
About three years is common, but each state sets its own rule. States also start the clock at different points: reinstatement, conviction or eligibility.
Florida keeps the FR-44 for three years after reinstatement. Texas sets two years from the conviction.
| State | How long the filing lasts |
|---|---|
| Florida (FR-44) | 3 years after reinstatement |
| Illinois | 3 years |
| Texas | 2 years from conviction |
| Wisconsin | 3 years from eligibility |
Every state's period is in the SR-22 length by state table. The agent tells you how long your state requires it.
DWI insurance costs the same way: how much it goes up
The increase comes from a surcharge for the conviction. How long the surcharge lasts depends on your state.
New York surcharges a DWI conviction for typically three years and generally caps the premium at three times the base. North Carolina lengthened surcharges from 3 years to 5 years for convictions with 4 or more points. That rule covers convictions on or after July 1, 2025.
The DUI itself can stay on your record longer than the surcharge. Progressive says that in many states a DUI stays visible for 7 to 10 years.

Companies that take DUI drivers
Several large insurers file after a DUI. Dairyland and The General specialize in drivers other companies decline.
- Progressive files SR-22 and FR-44 forms after a policy purchase.
- Dairyland says it generally charges no SR-22 filing fee.
- The General includes the SR-22 fee in its quote.
- GEICO files electronically or by mail.
If another company turned you down, the agent explains your state's assigned-risk plan on the call. Read more on the high-risk page.
Florida and Virginia use a different form
Florida and Virginia require an FR-44 after a DUI, with higher limits. Florida's FR-44 must carry $100,000/$300,000 bodily injury and $50,000 property damage, or a $350,000 combined single limit. Virginia sets FR-44 limits at double the SR-22 limits.
If you need this form, call and the agent quotes FR-44 limits and files it today.
