If a company turned you down or priced you high, call now. A licensed agent finds high risk auto insurance that files your SR-22 today, and the review of your court or DMV notice is free.
High-risk auto insurance is a regular policy priced for a driver with a DUI, a lapse, crashes or too many points. It costs more for a set period, often three years.
What makes a driver high risk
Insurers read your record and price the risk. One state lists the convictions and accidents that can be surcharged, including driving while intoxicated or impaired.
- A DUI or DWI conviction.
- At-fault accidents with damage over $2,000 in some states.
- Driving with no insurance, or a lapse.
- Speeding and other moving violations with points.
- An SR-22 or FR-44 requirement from the state.
A small accident can count too. In one state, two or more accidents under $2,000 are usually surcharged.

Car insurance for high-risk drivers: companies that take them
Some insurers build their business around these drivers. Dairyland says it may file an SR-22 electronically, and The General files in most states. Progressive and GEICO also write many high-risk policies.
These are called non-standard companies. Call now and your agent quotes the ones that file in your state, with the same limits. Then you pick the cheapest one that files.
State assigned-risk plans
When companies say no, your state's plan is the next stop. In one state's plan, a licensed agent applies for you and a company is assigned.
- You do not choose the company.
- You pay the plan rate at most, or the company's lower voluntary rate.
- You must be offered an installment plan in most cases.
- You can ask to change the assigned company within 30 days.
Another state offers a medical-only plan for drivers eligible for Federal Medicaid with hospitalization. It costs $365 a year. Your agent applies to your state's plan for you on the call.
How long the label lasts
Most surcharges fall off after about three years. In one state, a surcharge must be refunded if no claim follows for three years after the incident.
Other states run longer for serious cases. In one, certain convictions with 4 or more points on or after July 1, 2025 now carry a surcharge for 5 years.
Cost by reason
The reason sets the size of the increase. Rules differ by state, as these examples show.
| Reason | What one state's rule says |
|---|---|
| First at-fault accident | Up to 40% in many rating plans |
| Accident under $2,000, no injuries | Generally not surcharged |
| Serious conviction, 4+ points | 5-year surcharge |
| Any surcharge | Capped at three times the base |
| Driving uninsured | Fine up to $500 |
Driving uninsured costs more than the policy. A policy with the SR-22 attached is your way back to driving. Call now and get it filed today.
