A second Georgia no-insurance conviction brings the SR-22A

Georgia's filing has its own name: the Georgia Safety Responsibility Insurance Certificate, or SR-22A. The DDS no-proof FAQ says every customer convicted of a second or later 'No Insurance' citation must buy and keep an SR-22A policy. You cannot get a limited permit while that suspension runs.

Not owning a car does not get you out of it. DDS says a driver without a vehicle must buy an SR-22A Non-Owner's policy instead. Our non-owner SR-22 guide explains how that kind of policy works.

Georgia ties the SR-22A to up-front payment. Under the non-owner route, DDS says you prepay in full each 6 months and keep the policy for 3 years from the conviction date. A regular SR-22 policy is accepted too, but only when it is marked "Paid In Full".

Your insurance company can fax the certificate straight to DDS. A policy written in another state needs more paperwork. You must show a receipt proving payment to the insurer, plus proof that the policy meets Georgia's minimum limits.

Ninety days suspended, then the fee

You become eligible to reinstate after 90 days of suspension. Next comes the fee, listed on the DDS reinstatement fee table. A second or later no-proof suspension costs $300 by mail or $310 in person. A first no-proof suspension is $200 by mail or $210 in person. A first DUI for drivers 21 and over carries the same $200 or $210.

DDS takes payment by mail, online or in person, and it will not accept partial payments. Send the Official Notice of Suspension with a mailed payment so DDS can match it to your record. Your own fee can differ with conviction dates or multiple suspensions. Courts report convictions to DDS, and the DDS violations page points you to Online Services to see your status and reinstatement steps.

What a cancellation does to a Georgia license

The three years have teeth. If the SR-22A policy is canceled during that time, your insurer reports the cancellation to DDS. The result is the cancellation of your driver's license, according to the same DDS FAQ.

Georgia's liability minimum

Georgia drivers must carry liability insurance at the state minimum, per the Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. Bodily injury coverage is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per incident. Property damage coverage is $25,000 per incident.

The office warns that some drivers let coverage lapse or cancel without realizing it. Those drivers are considered uninsured, which is how a first or second no-insurance case starts.

Georgia drivers also ask

Can I get a limited permit during a second no-insurance suspension in Georgia?

No. DDS does not issue a limited permit for a second or later no-insurance violation. You serve the suspension, then reinstate with the SR-22A.

Will DDS take a regular SR-22 instead of an SR-22A?

Yes, if the SR-22 policy is marked "Paid In Full". Otherwise DDS requires the SR-22A for a second or later no-insurance suspension.

When does the three-year clock start for a non-owner SR-22A?

DDS counts the 3 years from the conviction date. You prepay the non-owner policy in full every 6 months during that time.
