The RMV wants a certificate from your insurer, not an SR-22
Massachusetts law describes the proof in its own words. Under Chapter 90, Section 34A, a certificate is the statement of an insurance company that it has or will insure the vehicle you register. No SR-22 form appears in that definition.
The certificate rides on your Registration and Title Application. The RMV insurance certification policy accepts a rubber or electronic insurance stamp in Section K. For electronic registrations it also takes a standalone certification listing the VIN and the owner's license number. Either way, the insurer signs, not you.
A dropped policy gives you 23 days before the revocation letter
Insurers report cancellations to the RMV's Insurance Policy Management program. The RMV's notice to insurance partners allows 23 calendar days to fix it. On day 23 a Letter of Intent to Revoke goes out, effective 10 calendar days later.
Timing matters here. Your new policy must start before the scheduled revocation date. A policy starting on that same date still leaves you revoked and owing a reinstatement fee.
Section 34H is the law behind this. The RMV's suspensions page adds that revocation lasts until you show proof of insurance. Restoring a registration revoked over insurance costs $50 on the RMV fee list.

OUI reinstatement fees climb to $1,200
License reinstatement fees range from $100 to $1,200, per the RMV's reinstatement page. Section 33 sets $500 for most OUI suspensions under Section 24. Revocations under the repeat-offense clauses of Section 24 cost $700 or $1,200.
A suspension of two years or more means retaking the learner's permit exam and the road test. The RMV can also order an alcohol program or driver retraining before you drive again.
Coverage the certificate has to back up
Minimums rose for policies written or renewed from July 1, 2025. The Division of Insurance coverage guide lists $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury. Property damage starts at $30,000. Personal injury protection, the no-fault medical and wage benefit, pays up to $8,000.
You can skip the policy with a deposit instead. Section 34D accepts $10,000 in cash or securities placed with the state treasurer.
When companies turn you down: the MAIP
After an OUI, voluntary insurers can say no. The Massachusetts Auto Insurance Plan then assigns you a company, which must write the policy except in very limited situations. You first need written denials from the voluntary market.
One catch: an assigned company can refuse you while your license is suspended or revoked. So clear the license first, then line up coverage. Higher risk drivers can read our high-risk auto insurance guide.
An SR-22 owed to another state
If another state suspends you, the RMV suspends your Massachusetts license too. Its out-of-state suspensions page says you must reinstate in that state first. Any filing that state demands gets settled there.
Then bring a clearance letter, or a driving record no more than 30 days old, to an RMV Service Center. If the Massachusetts suspension already took effect, expect a $100 reinstatement fee. An out-of-state OUI sends you to a Hearings Officer with court abstracts.
