Ohio's non-compliance suspension and the one-year SR-22/bond
Fail to show proof of insurance at a traffic stop or a crash, and the BMV places a non-compliance suspension on you. The BMV's insurance suspension page offers one way out first. If you had valid coverage at the time, proving it to the BMV removes the suspension.
If you did not, a first offense means carrying a certificate of insurance, the SR-22/bond, for one year. You also pay a reinstatement fee. For a first offense added to the record before April 9, 2025, the filing lasts three years instead.
Repeat offenses inside one year stack up fast
A second non-compliance offense in a one-year period brings a one-year suspension. You serve it, carry the SR-22/bond for one year, and pay the fee. A third offense in a year brings a two-year suspension with the same one-year filing.
Older records follow the older rule. A second or later offense added within a five-year period before April 9, 2025 needs the SR-22/bond for five years.
Driving while suspended has its own cost. A court can order your vehicle immobilized and your plates impounded for driving under a financial responsibility suspension. Second offense OVI is on that same list.

Judgment and security suspensions after an uninsured crash
A lawsuit over crash damage or injuries can end in a judgment suspension. It stays until the BMV gets a payment agreement or release, a court journal entry, or a bankruptcy petition or discharge. Anyone under this suspension must file an SR-22/bond.
A security suspension hits an uninsured driver whose crash causes more than $400 in property damage or an injury claim. You serve up to two years. You also need a signed agreement or release, a deposit with the BMV, or a bankruptcy filing listing the claim.
What ORC 4509.101 charges, and the amnesty payment plan
Ohio Revised Code 4509.101 sets the financial responsibility reinstatement fee. It is $40 for a first violation, $300 for a second, and $600 for a third or later one. A deputy registrar adds a $10 service fee. You must also file and continuously maintain proof of financial responsibility.
The reinstatement fees and amnesty page offers a plan if you owe at least $150.00. You must pay at least $25.00 every 30 days or the plan is canceled. Under amnesty, a single-offense fee drops to half. Our reinstatement fee guide explains how these fees fit together.
Who the SR-22/bond covers and where it is written
Ohio defines the SR-22/bond as a minimum-limit liability policy covering only the person named on it. Ohio's mandatory insurance page puts that minimum at $25,000 per person and $50,000 per crash for injury, plus $25,000 for property.
The company must be licensed to do business in Ohio, and it files the form with the BMV. Electronic filings usually take up to 72 hours to process once the BMV receives them. The insurer must report a canceled policy. Moving away does not end the requirement: the filing must still be written for Ohio.
