An uninsured crash in Wyoming brings a suspension, fault or no fault
Every driver in a crash with over $1,000 in damage, or an injury outside your household, must show current liability insurance. WYDOT checks coverage online, per its Driver Services FAQ. When it cannot confirm yours, the law requires a suspension regardless of fault or residency.
The notice letter lists ways to stop it before the start date. You can send an SR-21, a form your agent verifies, showing you were insured that day. A notarized release from the other party also works. So does a certified check, surety bond or certificate of deposit for the amount in the letter.
Otherwise, the accident procedures page adds two more costs. You file an SR-22 for 3 years from the start date of the suspension and pay $50. Letting coverage drop during those three years means a new suspension.
The statute behind the three year count
Under W.S. 31-7-128(e) in Title 31, a suspended driver keeps proof on file for three years beginning on the date of suspension. Under 31-7-127(c), a revocation works the same way, counted from the revocation date.
A conviction for driving uninsured has its own path under 31-4-103. WYDOT must require three years of proof. If you do not file within 30 days of the notice, your license is suspended until the proof arrives. The offense itself carries a fine of $500 to $1,500, up to six months in jail, or both.

After a DWUI, the SR-22 comes before any interlock license
WYDOT's Driving Privilege Withdrawal guide lists the SR-22 among the reinstatement steps for every DWUI level. To drive during an eligible suspension, you need an ignition interlock restricted license. That license requires an SR-22, the $50 fee and an installation certificate. An interlock is a breath-test lock on the car.
A first DWUI at .15 or higher means six months, a second means one year, and a third means two. A fourth brings a lifetime term. If the SR-22 is missing when the mandatory suspension ends, you stay suspended until it is filed.
Three boxes WYDOT checks before it reinstates you
The reinstatement page lists them. Your suspension period is over with nothing else pending. Your insurance company filed the SR-22 and the department received it. You paid the fee, which is $50 for nearly every suspension and $5 for a child support hold.
Pay through oneWYO online, at a driver exam office, or by mail to Driver Services in Cheyenne. Buy from a company authorized to write policies in Wyoming, with at least $25,000 / $50,000 / $20,000 in liability. The FAQ says the SR-22 typically reaches Driver Services electronically within 24 to 72 hours after purchase.
A bond, a cash deposit, or a move out of state
Besides insurance, W.S. 31-9-402 allows a surety bond or a deposit of money or securities. Under 31-9-409, the deposit is $25,000 in cash or qualifying securities, certified by the transportation director. Our SR-22 bond guide explains how a bond differs from a policy.
Moving away does not cancel the filing on its own. The Driver Services FAQ says Wyoming releases you once you complete its non-resident proof of financial responsibility form. You still might owe a reinstatement fee. Report any address change to WYDOT within 10 days, since its mail is not forwarded.
